Reducing the cycle of poverty through creative reuse, redistribution and renewal

    Positively impacting the environment

    CREATIVE REUSE - DIVERSION

Scraps KC 's retail store is filled with a multitude of creative, colorful, and useful industrial, household, and educational materials that would normally end up in the landfill. Businesses, manufacturers, schools and community members donate items that would be useful to artists, teachers, makers, churches, scouts, DIYers, and other creative people, instead of discarding the items into the trash. Scraps KC diverted over 12 tons of materials from the landfill by the time we launched the operation in September, 2016.

Inspiring creativity in art and education

    CREATIVE REUSE - UPCYCLING

Scraps KC is perfect for the creative and those who need a little help getting creative. Our customers select items for their unique creation or rely on the expertise of our staff to help them with their product. We even provide creative kits filled with our unique resources that can inspire anyone's imagination.

Creativity isn't just for art! We love to encourage creativity in learning at home and in the classroom. Our materials, field trips and Make-and-Take space are just some of the ways your kids can enhance their education.

    Providing hope for the homeless

    REDISTRIBUTION & RENEWAL

Scraps KC is honored to be able to provide opportunities for the homeless of Kansas City to volunteer in our retail store. They provide the manpower to maintain and improve our facility and package donated school supplies for redistribution . These supplies are then distributed to classrooms in disadvantaged communities - the core of our Adopt A Class program.

In exchange for their hard work, our homeless volunteers receive a homemade meal, in addition to dignity and survival items to help them get through another day. We hope to grow our resources and support network to employ our homeless volunteers as soon as possible, and play a part in their renewal as they strive to be contributing members of our community.

Scraps KC also works directly with the homeless on the streets and excess dignity and survival donations will be shared with those in dire need.

  • ADOPT A CLASS

Help SCRAPS KC reach its 2017 goal of providing school supplies to at least 100 classrooms in greater Kansas City.

All donated school supplies are donated by individuals or businesses or have been re-purposed from schools that would otherwise discard the materials. It’s communities helping communities! Adopted classes will begin receiving school supplies and Scraps materials in August, 2017

    I want to be adopted!

I am a teacher in a school with 90% or higher free/reduced lunch. I would love to be adopted so my students can receive supplies for the 2017-18 school year.

    I want to donate supplies!

I am an administrator or teacher at a school with a surplus of supplies, or I am a generous member of the community that wants to see our students succeed.

I want to adopt a class!

I want to be a key to the future of students attending less advantaged schools, and support SCRAPS KC in providing supplies to these students.

Scraps KC -- Kansas City’s First Creative Reuse Center – Launches Adopt-A-Class Program

Fundraising Campaign Helps to Provide School Supplies for Kansas City Classrooms

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (December 6, 2016) – The holidays are a perfect time for making positive impacts on the community and for helping to make dreams come true, especially for area school children. Sometimes those dreams are just to have enough supplies to support a classroom’s learning projects. Scraps KC is answering that need with its Adopt-A-Class Program and a goal of raising enough funds to provide supplies for more than 100 Kansas City classrooms in three months.

“Teachers, parents and children in our Kansas City community often struggle with not having enough money to provide school supplies needed for basic learning activities. Even when classrooms start out the year with supplies, by January, the supplies are often gone and it’s hard to finish the year strong,” said Brenda Mott, founder of Scraps KC, Kansas City’s first creative reuse center. “At Scraps KC, we receive discarded products from businesses and individuals that they can no longer can use, but can be reused in some fashion. Also, schools with plenty of supplies donate their excess to Scraps KC, too. These “gently-used” items can then be repackaged to help other classrooms in Kansas City remain vibrant and creative.”

Through Scraps KC’s Adopt-A-Class Program, those who want to donate can adopt a class in the greater Kansas City metro area that is less economically advantaged, and Scraps KC will provide a box of supplies to ensure students have what they need for their school projects.

For example, several sets of teachers at the end of last year’s school session donated more than 300 bottles of half-used bottles of glue that Scraps KC then combined to produce more than 130 full bottles of glue. “We’re receiving perfectly good supplies that just need to be repackaged and redistributed to classrooms that are short of supplies – the teachers need the help and the kids love to have creative, educational supplies for their projects,” Mott continued.

Donating is easy as Scraps KC is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax-deductible. Just go to www.scrapskc.org/#adopt-a-class for more information or to donate online, go to: www.scrapskc.org/#donate-online.

    Various donation levels include:

    • $50 provides 1 box of supplies and Scraps KC materials in August for back-to-school
    • $100 provides 1 box of supplies and Scraps KC materials in August for back-to-school AND 1 box of refreshed supplies and materials in January
    • $300 provides 1 box of supplies of Scraps KC materials in August and January AND 1 onsite workshop designed and taught by Scraps KC
    • $500 provides 1 package of school supplies for every student in the class AND a Scraps KC workshop
    • Other denominations are also accepted that can go to the Adopt-A-Class Program, as well as help with homeless outreach, and/or provide birthday parties at Scraps KC for children that may not be able to afford a celebration.

Go to www.scrapskc.org/#donate-online to make all tax-deductible donations.

“Our goal is to impact more than 100 classrooms in three months, then continue our fundraising through the summer 2017 so we can match that number of classrooms when kids go back to school next August,” said Mott. “As you think about your holiday donations, please consider how your funds can go to a classroom for supplies that inspire creative ingenuity. Also, check to see if your company has a matching program to double your donation.”

Scraps KC is located at 1324 W. 12th Street, 2nd Floor, in Kansas City, Mo., adjacent to the 12th Street Bridge. Scraps KC is open from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Scraps KC -- Kansas City’s First Creative Reuse Center –Launches this Week in KCMO’s West Bottoms

Inspired creativity and ingenuity that positively impacts the environment, enhances creativity in art and education and provides hope for the homeless

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (September 22, 2016) – This week, Scraps KC opens its doors in Kansas City’s West Bottoms as the first “creative reuse center” in Kansas City, Mo., inspiring upcycling and repurposing of recycled household and industrial materials for a wide variety of creative projects and programs. Scraps KC is now located at 1324 W. 12th Street, 2nd Floor, in Kansas City, Mo., adjacent to the 12th Street Bridge. This new non-profit organization provides Kansas City businesses and industrial centers a place to donate their discarded materials and by-products like vinyl, outdoor fabrics, yarn, metals, woods, carpet squares, paper, plastics, cardboard tubes, and much more that would otherwise end up in the landfills. Instead of throwing items into a landfill, businesses donate materials to Scraps KC to be resold to artists, teachers, DIYers, scouts, churches, makers, other individuals and organizations at a dramatically reduced cost. Scraps KC also provides a central location for these individuals and groups to learn about creative reuse and to design works of art for themselves. Scraps KC opens its doors with an inventory of more than 12 tons of materials diverted from the landfills.

“Scraps KC has a multitude of creative, colorful and useful industrial and household materials that would normally end up in a landfill,” said Brenda Mott, creator and founder of Scraps KC. “Our organization helps the environment by reusing industrial and household discards, offering creative education for all ages, serving as a creative space and materials resource for local artists, while providing workshops or parties for kids and adults of all ages.”

Perfect Timing: Scraps KC Loves Seasonal Opportunities

With Halloween and the holidays approaching, Scraps KC offers individuals and groups the opportunity to make costumes or other decorations or gifts for the holidays. Scraps KC provides pre-made, imagination kits for kids, as well as a “make-and-take space” where families can create with different materials.

“We encourage individuals, families or groups to join Scraps KC on early release from school days, weekends or any day of the week,” Mott continued. “Our assortment of materials inspires participants to make one-of-a-kind decorations, costumes and gifts that are unique to each individual creator and are more meaningful and memorable.”

    Donating Materials to Scraps KC

Scraps KC collects materials from interested businesses within a 30-mile radius of Kansas City, sending a van on a regular schedule to collect materials left over from production processes or business operations. The organization is very interested in any overruns, by-products or seconds that could be repurposed. Scraps KC also is open to pick up from businesses located beyond the 30-mile radius if they provide unique and useful materials that are hard to find, or can provide popular materials in greater volumes.

Individuals also can donate materials to Scraps KC. Popular materials include household items, yarn, knitting needles, craft materials (open and partially filled), fabric, sewing notions, buttons, old or broken costume jewelry, toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes, scrapbook papers, scrapbook materials, loose hardware and gift materials (old wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows). Go to the http://www.ScrapsKC.orgfor a list of ideas.

    Volunteer Opportunities for the Homeless

Scraps KC provides volunteer opportunities for the homeless with the possibility of earning a paid position, as well as providing them with food and sanctuary while they work. For their time and efforts, they are provided dignity items to assist them with everyday living needs. These items include athletic socks (new only), wallets, full size deodorant, hand warmers, t-shirts/sweatshirts (M-XXL), men's underwear (new only), durable backpacks, $10 food gift cards, and day ($3) or monthly ($50) bus passes.

“It was amazing. We had six homeless volunteers who were looking for ways to make a difference and use their skills. These individuals may be homeless, but many still have a desire to contribute to the community. They were an integral part of the moving process, organizing the retail store, sorting through and logging the materials and preparing the store to be ready for its opening.”

Hours for Scraps KC are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Wednesdays Scraps KC is open late, from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. To schedule private parties or workshops, go to http://www.ScrapsKC.org.

  • Adopt-A-Class & Support Scraps KC

    Dear Friends of Scraps KC,

The holidays are a perfect time for making dreams come true. It has always been a dream of mine to open Kansas City’s first creative reuse center. As the founder of Scraps KC, thanks to the generous support of many of you, we celebrated our third month in business, just in time to add a dose of inspired creativity to the holidays!

What is a creative reuse center?

Scraps KC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides businesses and industrial centers in greater Kansas City with a place to donate their discarded materials like vinyl, outdoor fabrics, yarn, metals, woods, carpet squares, paper, plastics, cardboard tubes, and much more that would otherwise end up in the landfills.

Our mission: Inspire creativity in art and education, positively impact the environment, and provide hope for the homeless

    • Scraps KC opened its doors in September with over twenty commercial partners and an inventory of more than 12 tons of materials diverted from the landfills. Yes, that is almost 25,000 pounds!
    • Scraps KC had almost 2,000 people visit the retail location in our first two months to purchase materials, artistically create in the make-and-take studio, host a birthday party, and in some cases generously volunteer their time.
    • Scraps KC provides volunteer opportunities for the homeless with the possibility of earning a paid position. For their time and efforts, they are provided food, clothing, and hygiene items to assist them with everyday living needs. Eight homeless members of our community have logged well over 100 hours of volunteer time through November, and then joined us for Thanksgiving dinner at Scraps so we could show them our tremendous appreciation.

ADOPT A CLASS to enhance the educational opportunities for our students

Schools everywhere struggle to find supplies for everyday classroom needs. Many teachers wonder how they’ll find the supplies needed for an entire school year; research shows that teachers, on average, spend $600 per school year out of their own pocket to close the gap. On December 1st, Scraps KC launched a program to help our teachers and students.

You can adopt a class in the greater KC metro area that is less economically advantaged, and we’ll provide school supplies and other resources to ensure students have what they need for their school projects. All school supplies donated to classrooms have been re-purposed from schools and community members that would otherwise discard the materials. How does this work?

For the following donation … Scraps KC will provide…

    $50

1 box of supplies and Scraps materials in August for back to school

    $100

1 box of supplies and Scraps materials in August for back to school AND

1 box of refreshed supplies and materials in January

    $300

1 box of supplies and Scraps materials in August and January AND

1 onsite workshop designed and taught by Scraps KC

    OR ….

    $500

1 package of school supplies for every student in the class AND workshop

*** You can also donate an amount less than $50 and it will be placed in a pool that will accumulate to provide the benefits outlined above.

Our initial goal is to impact AT LEAST 100 local classrooms in 3 months! We will continue our fundraising through the summer and attempt to match that number of classrooms when kids return to school next August.

As you think about your holiday and year-end donations, consider how your funds can go to a local classroom for school supplies that inspire educational possibilities. Also check to see if your company has a matching program to double your donation!

It’s with heart-felt gratitude that I thank all of you for your past and continued support of Scraps KC. YOU make all of our efforts possible and your donations will help us continue our essential work in the community.

Please visit Scraps KC at 1324 W. 12th Street, 2nd Floor, in Kansas City, Mo., adjacent to the 12th Street Bridge. We are open from 12-5 Tuesday thru Friday and 10-5 on Saturday.

We hope you have a blessed holiday season!
